June Carol Hurlbut was born Sept. 25, 1951, in Antigo, Wisconsin, to Ira and Lois (Graveen) Hurlbut. After graduating from Ashwaubenon High School in 1969, June attended the University of Wisconsin – Stevens Point, where she received a degree in mathematics education in 1973. June married David Sylte on Sept. 25, 1976, in Green Bay, Wisconsin. After their marriage, the couple moved around the country to follow Dave’s career with the Social Security Administration. June began teaching at Cloquet, Minnestoa, High School, and then three years later moved to Bemidji. She continued her teaching career in Akeley, Minnesota, before moving to Chicago, where she taught at Lake Park High School. Her next move was to Marion, Indiana, where she taught for 22 years, and finished her master’s degree at Ball State University. Also while in Indiana, June was a master teacher with Purdue University. She developed a general math curriculum and presented it around the country in a week-long workshop for teachers. In January 2005, June and Dave moved to Austin, and June taught at Southland until her retirement in 2012. June loved her teaching career. She also enjoyed music, reading, crafts, crocheting, and knitting. Her musical involvement included participation in the Christmas City Sweet Adelines Chorus in Marion, Indiana, the Zumbro Valley Chorus in Rochester, Minnesota, and the St. Olaf Church Choir in Austin.
