HAYFIELD — The Hayfield girls basketball team has gotten a lot of production out of its current senior class over the past few years and the Vikings are hoping they can send the group out in style.

Hayfield honored its five seniors on senior night and the Vikings beat Blooming Prairie 75-45 Monday night.

It was the final regular season home game for the Vikings (20-4 overall), who have high hopes for the postseason, which begins next week.

“They’ve been a part of the varsity team for four years and they’ve been very instrumental for the program,” Hayfield co-head coach Kasey Krekling said of the team’s senior class, which includes Carrie Rutledge, Maggie Streightiff, Kate Kruger, Olivia Matti and Caitlyn Severson. “They put in a lot of time when they were younger, they’ve been very talented and they have a big goal that they haven’t reached yet and that’s getting to the state tournament.”

Hayfield jumped out to a 16-2 lead on BP (15-7 overall) as it’s full court pressure forced a lot of breakaway opportunities. Rutledge led the storm up front as she racked up 15 points, three rebounds, four assists and nine steals for Hayfield.

Rutledge said the Vikings are clicking at the right time as a team.

“We’re pretty strong as a team,” Rutledge said. “We can count on the bench and I feel like we play well as a team.”

Hayfield junior Emma Holst hit five three-pointers in the first half to score all 15 of her points and Kruger added nine points, five rebounds and five assists. Kruger and the Vikings will play at Kenyon-Wanamingo Tuesday and at Goodhue Friday. If the Vikings win out, they’ll host the HVL title game on Monday night in their final year in the HVL.

Hayfield lost the HVL title game in 2013 and 2017 as it is still looking for its first HVL title.

“We’re leaving [the HVL] after this year so winning that final title would mean a lot,” Kruger said. “Plus getting an extra game would help. Every game we can have this season is what we want.”

BP struggled with 26 turnovers against a tough Hayfield defense, but head coach John Burns was glad the Awesome Blossoms were able to get a look at a team they may see again in the postseason. BP freshman Megan Oswald stepped up in the loss as she had 16 points and 10 rebounds.

“Any time you play a good team, it’s going to make you better,” Bruns said. “We were a little bit tentative against their press. When you pick up your dribble they make you pay every time. I was very happy with how Rachel played. She wasn’t intimidated in the least and she just went out there and played ball.”
