Bruins dominate from start to finish on ‘Paint the Rink Pink’ night

The Austin Bruins turned the tables on the Minnesota Magicians.

One day after losing 5-1 to the Magicians, Austin beat the Magicians (20-17-3-2 overall) 5-1 on ‘Paint the Rink Pink’ night in Riverside Arena Saturday.

The Bruins (24-13-2-4 overall) held a 20-1 shot advantage in the first period as Travis Kothenbeutel scored early on and Alex Mella scored two third period goals to ice the game.

“The crowd was into it and got our guys going,” Howard said. “That first period was probably our best period of the year. We needed to bounce back from last night and we’ve got to keep it going.”

Alex Schilling stopped 16 of the 17 shots he saw and his shutout was broken up when the Magicians found the net with 1:49 left in the game. Schilling said it’s always good to pick up a win on ‘Paint the Rink Pink’ night.

“We just stuck to our systems and we needed get two points. We came through. We get a ton of support from Austin and to give the fans a good show and get a win for them is nice,” Schilling said. “The ultimate goal is to win the Robertson Cup and we’ve just got to take it one game a time. I get a lot of help from the defense and the forwards in all three zones.”

Howard said the Bruins are looking to do everything for the team from here on out.

“It’s a team thing right now and that’s what we’ve been focusing on all week,” Howard said. “We’re doing things for the team and not the individual. We’ve been fortunate so far this year, but we’ve got to stay on it.”
