Nicholas Hummel, Jr., 89

Nicholas Hummel, Jr., 89, of Austin, Minnesota, died Monday, Oct. 9, 2017, at Mayo Clinic Hospital Rochester, Saint Marys Campus.

Nicholas “Nick” was born on May 29, 1928, in Austin to Nicholas and Selma (Hendrickson) Hummel, Sr. His grandparents came to America from Bavaria, Germany, and homesteaded in LeRoy, Minnesota. Nick was raised in Austin and attended Austin Public Schools. As a young man he began his long career with Hormel Foods.

On July 15, 1950, he was united in marriage to Sarah “Sally” Henderson. They raised their family and resided in Austin their entire married life.  Nick retired from Hormel Foods after 42 years of dedicated service. He was an avid outdoorsman, especially trapping, fishing and hunting. He learned his love of trapping from his grandparents, who brought that knowledge with them from Germany, and continued to learn those skills from his father. Nick instilled that same passion for the outdoors in his grandchildren.

Nick and his wife Sally were longtime members of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Austin and were part of the original congregation that established the church in Austin.

He is survived by his sons, Stephen Hummel of Austin, Mark Hummel of Inver Grove Heights, Minnesota; daughters, Debbie (Roy) Alstad of Minneapolis, Cindy (David) Ostrander of Austin, Nancy (Charles) Cook of Austin; by his grandchildren and great-grandchildren; brother, Donald (Patricia) Hummel of Austin. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Sarah “Sally” on Nov. 9, 1998; brother, Richard Hummel.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 14, at Worlein Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor James Groleau officiating. Visitation will be held from 4-7 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 13, at Worlein Funeral Home and will continue for one hour prior to services on Saturday afternoon at the funeral home. Interment will be in the Oakwood Cemetery in Austin.  In lieu of flowers memorials are preferred. Condolences may be expressed to the family online at www.worlein.com.
