Best Bets: Raye concert to benefit police officers

Music lovers are going to have plenty to choose from Saturday in Austin, whether you are a country and western music fan, or someone who likes to rock out to the sounds of the 1950s’ emerging sound of rock and roll.

The Austin Police Officers Association will host Nashville recording artist Collin Raye at 7 p.m. Saturday at the Knowlton Auditorium at Austin High School.

Raye has set country standards in hits such as “Love, Me,” “In This Life,” “Not That Different,” and “If I Were You.” Called an energizing showman, he is also known for rockers as “My Kind of Girl,” “That’s My Story,” “I Can Still Feel You,” and “I Want You Bad.”

Raye first tasted fame with “Love, Me” in 1991. When “Little Rock,” an anthem for those struggling with addiction recovery, hit the chart in 1994, its video led to over 100,000 phone calls to Alcoholics Anonymous from folks seeking help in their addictions. He has had  24 top 10 records, and has been a 10-time male vocalist of the year nominee — five by the Country Music Association and five by the Academy of Country Music. Tickets are $35 in advance or at the door. Advance tickets available now at 507-990-3892 or at the Law Enforcement Center.

“One Night in Memphis,” which begins at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at the Historic Paramount Theatre, pays tribute to the Sun Records recording artists, Carl Perkins, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis and Elvis Presley.

The production uses a real jam session of the “Million Dollar Quartet” that took place in 1956 at a recording studio at Sun Records. Booked by Carl Perkins, a yet-to-be-star Jerry Lee Lewis was hired to play piano. Later, Cash and Presley arrived — each never having met the others — to form a legendary night of music. John Mueller, who created the show, may be a familiar name to many in this area; his Buddy Holly act has been often featured at the Winter Dance Party at the Historic Surf Ballroom in Clear Lake, Iowa.
