With the destruction wrought by hurricanes  in the southern U.S. and beyond, Austin-area churches are reacting to help survivors. Here are some of the efforts:

Racine church bakes for hurricane relief: The Racine United Methodist Church baked 190 loaves on Saturday, Sept. 16; the $1,892 raised through sales of the oatmeal bread will go to hurricane relief.

The church sold 178 of them and used four loaves to feed the volunteers at lunch time and donated the remaining loaves to the food shelf. The goal was to make 150 loaves.

The sale was conducted in a coordinated event with community ovens at White Bear Lake, Minneapolis, St. Paul, and New Brighton.

St. Augustine and St. Edwards  to have special collections Sept. 23-24: “For the second time in less than two weeks, another devastating hurricane has affected our brothers and sisters, this time in the Caribbean and Florida,” the church online calendar says.

A special collection will be taken at Mass Sept. 23 and Sept. 24 for Catholic Charities USA, which is responding to urgent needs for shelter, water, and food of those affected.
