Plant sign comes down; Downtown plant sign disassembled Thursday morning

Just about eight months after it was announced, the neon sign above the downtown Austin Municipal Plant was finally taken down Thursday morning.

Workers from Rochester Sign Service began taking the sign down, letter by letter, at around 9:30 a.m.

Though the taking down of the letters might mean the end of an era for the plant as it gets closer to demolition to make room for the new Austin Community Recreation Center, it’s not the end for the sign.

The letters will be reassembled at the new Austin Utilities Service and Operations Center.
