ST. PAUL— Authorities have filed felony charges against a Minneapolis man whose car sliced directly through the midsection of a Metro Transit bus in St. Paul last week, killing one passenger and critically injuring another.

The Ramsey County attorney’s office on Monday charged 26-year-old Tyler Randall Bjelland with criminal vehicular homicide in the death of 48-year-old Ken Foster and criminal vehicular operation for hurting a 19-year-old passenger who remains hospitalized with a brain injury.

The criminal complaint says a police officer reported that Bjelland, who was already on probation for a DWI-related conviction, smelled of alcohol after the crash.

Bjelland is due to make his first court appearance Tuesday. Prosecutors say they’ll ask the judge to set bail at $500,000. Court records don’t list an attorney who could comment on his behalf.
