The Austin boys and girls track and field teams made their home debuts and they had some individual success as they hosted a quadrangular with Albert Lea, Stewartville and Kasson-Mantorville at Larry Gilbertson track and field Thursday.

Austin senior Trent Brown just recently began competing after basketball season wrapped up, but he was hitting his stride as he took first in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 16.03 seconds and he took first in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 41.96 seconds.

“We’ve got a long season in front of us so there’s still going to be a lot of opportunity for everyone to improve,” Brown said. “We’re looking forward to that.”

Pat Hagan also had a big day for the Packer boys as he won the shot put and discus and although Jany Gash couldn’t land a qualifying jump in the triple jump, he’s hoping to have a big year as well. Brown said he would like to see that trio have a big spring.

“’m hoping I can take some time off the hurdles like I did last year and I’m hoping to make a state run like Jany in jumps and Patrick in throwing,” Brown said. “We’ve got a lot of guys with high hopes this year.”

Austin swept the pole vault as Sydney Marsh won the girls meet with a height of 10 feet and Aiden Wilson won the boys meet with a personal record height of 12-9.

“I’ve come really far. I started in seventh grade and I kept improving in short increments every year,” Wilson said. “Last year I really had a bad year, but this year I’m really going after it. I’m incredibly happy with how I performed today and I want to get that 13-10 height to get to state.”

The Austin girls were led by Amber Hansen, who took first in the shot put with a distance of 37-2.5 and she won the discus with a 110-5. Hansen is adjusting to new thrower coach in Gabe Nelson and he said she has potential to make some big improvements.

“We’re working throw some things and we’re close to where we want to be,” Nelson said. “Right now there’s some little things that are holding us back. What we’re doing in discus are completely new for her. She has 130 or 140 potential in her.”

Taige Iverson won the 100-meter hurdles for Austin and Paige Raymond won the 300-meter hurdles. Austin head girls track and field coach Nancy Jones said it was a plus to get the second meet of the season in already.

“It’s nice to get two meets in and start seeing what we’ve got for athletes,” Jones said. “I’ve got a lot of new girls out. “Hopefully we’ll start getting healthy. We’ve got some distance runners that are dealing with injuries.”
