The Riverland Community College softball team opened its season on a bumpy note as it was swept by Lake Region State College by scores of 25-0 in five innings and 13-0 in five innings in the Dome at the Wescott Athletic Complex Monday.

The Blue Devils (0-2 overall) compiled just two hits, but they committed zero errors in the second game as they began to adjust to playing together as a team for the first time.

“We had some walks and we mis-played some balls, but for the most part I thought the girls did a good job,” said RCC head coach Jason Heller said. “We haven’t been able to practice in a real infield or outfield and this was a little bit new. I kind of figured this would be a learning experience for them. We’ll go from here.”

Heller, who is a former RCC assistant coach, is in his first year at the helm for the Blue Devils. Heller said his team is low on experience, but he likes the work ethic they’ve shown so far. He was especially pleased to get a chance to get to play two games this early in the season.

“This dome is great. We can get games in before it’s nice out. In years past you had to wait until the snow was gone or go south. This is a much better alternative,” Heller said. “They’re way ahead of what I would’ve expected them to be at this point. Now they’ve got to catch up to everyone else. They’re going to be better than they were today.”

Allison Sharpe and Kayla Crowell had RCC’s lone two hits on the night.
