Thaulow “Sky” Hovda, 87

Thaulow “Sky” Hovda, 87, of Wabasha, Minnesota, died Monday Feb. 13, 2017, at St. Elizabeth’s Medical Center in Wabasha.

Thaulow Norman “Sky” Hovda was born June 19, 1929, on the family farm north of Grand Meadow near Bear Creek to Thaulow and Amalia (Bengtson) Hovda. He attended and graduated from Grand Meadow High School in 1948 and attended college in Winona for a short time. On June 23, 1950, he was united in marriage to Donna Eastlee. She passed away in 2003. “Sky” was drafted into the United States Army in 1951 and served for approximately one year in Korea and Japan before his discharge in 1953. He returned to the family farm and later went to work for Freeborn-Mower Electric where he worked as a lineman for 33 years retiring in 1989. “Sky” was a member of the VFW in Wabasha, was a member of several bowling leagues throughout the years and was also a member of Faith Lutheran Church in Wabasha. He enjoyed the outdoors, hunting, fishing, trapping, tying flies and fly fishing. He also enjoyed hunting for agates and ginseng. “Sky” was a very humble man.

He is survived by his wife, Darlene of Wabasha, with whom he was united in marriage on Aug. 5, 2010, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua; Iowa; his children; Todd (Catherine) Hovda of Kasson, Minnesota, TeriJo Hay of Arlington, Texas, and Camille (Jeff) Lechnir of Kasson; step-children; Jeff (Koni) Sorensen of Zumbro Falls, Minnesota, Jon (Kelli) Sorenson of Hayward, Wisconsin, and Rusty (Melanie) Sorenson of Mazeppa, Minnesota; six grandchildren, seven step-grandchildren and five step-great-grandchildren; one sister, Amalia (Howard) Paschke of Blue Earth, Minnesota; and Hjalmer (Gretchen) Hovda of Progresso, Texas. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Donna; two brothers, Herman and Oliver; and three sisters, Margaret, Betsy and Freda.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Feb. 17, 2017, at Bear Creek Lutheran Church. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 16, 2017, also at Bear Creek Lutheran Church and will continue for one hour prior to the service.
