Gymnasts returning to state; Girls land season-best score to make it 8 years in a row

The Austin gymnastics team came through with a breakthrough performance to earn its sixth straight trip to state as it won the Section 1A meet in Pine Island Saturday.

The Packers boosted their season’s best score by three points as they finished with a mark of 148.075.

“We had a couple girls fight through injuries and a couple stepped in as alternates,” Austin head coach Matt Schmit said. “Everyone on the team found a way to contribute and it shows in the score.”

Jennifer Boyle had a career-best all-around score of 38.375 to take first, Maddie Mullenbach took second in the all-around with a score of 38.050 and Paige Raymond was fourth in the all-around with a 36.150.

Pine Island-Zumbrota-Mazeppa took second with a 143.075.

The Minnesota Class A state team gymnastics meet will be held at the University of Minnesota Sports Pavilion in Minneapolis at  11 a.m. Friday and the state individual meet is at the Pavilion at 11 a.m. Saturday.

It will be Austin’s seventh trip to state in the last eight years.
