KASSON — The Hayfield girls basketball team picked a bad night to have a rough shooting performance as it suffered its second biggest loss of the season when it fell to Kasson-Mantorville 64-43 in the HVL title game Monday.

The Vikings, who won the HVL Blue Division, couldn’t keep pace with the KoMets, who won the Gold Division, as Hayfield shot just 3-for-20 on three-pointers. Maggie Streightiff had 15 points, five rebounds and two steals, while hitting all three of Hayfield’s three-pointers. She helped put the Vikings (21-5 overall) up 19-17 early in the game.

“Maggie kept us in it in the first half. Our team hasn’t shot like that all year. That’s not going to get it done and hopefully we got that out of our system before the playoffs,” Hayfield co-head coach Kasey Krekling said. ‘Something that was concerning is we had some girls that missed a few shots and then they didn’t want to shoot anymore. You can’t play five on four.”

Carrie Rutledge added 16 points for Hayfield, while Kristin Scott had 20 points for KM and Mikayla Grant added 19 points.

Hayfield is hoping to re-discover its shooting stroke as it will now focus on the Section 1AA tournament. No. 2 seeded Hayfield will host No. 15 Triton 7:30 p.m. Thursday.

“Hopefully we learn from this and get better and make a run,” Krekling said. “The last time we lost like this it was our first game and we won 13 in a row after that.“
