She was born March 21, 1923, in Wykoff, Minnesota, to Robert and Luella Barr. Bette grew up and attended school in Wykoff before moving to Minneapolis to work. During this time, she studied at MacPhail Center for Music in East Minneapolis, where her final recital piece was recorded on vinyl. She had a lovely first soprano voice. Bette enjoyed the single life until age 34, when a young Air Force sergeant sat down next to her on a fateful Greyhound bus trip in 1957. On Nov. 25 of that same year, after a very short courtship, she was united in marriage to William H. Haney in Omaha, Neb. The couple lived in Cape Cod and various other military towns while Bill was in the service, and Bette cared for their three children alone when Bill was stationed out of the country.  Bill retired from the service in the mid-1960s, when the family moved to the Kasson/Mantorville, Minnesota area until their final move to Lyle.

Bette never stopped singing right up to the very end of her life, always serving as a soloist in church, an active member in church and community choirs, and all day long as she worked around the house. She was still singing the week before she went to be with the Lord. She was a key member of the Lyle Christian and Missionary Alliance Church for over 30 years, where she faithfully served and attended with her family. Bette will always be remembered as a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, and friend.
