The Austin clay target team has had a lot of success this season and its had a couple of big time performers in two of its original members — Nathan White and Morgan Schubert.

Schubert is the first ever female shooter to lead Austin in trap shooting and the team sits first in its conference headed into the final meet of the season on Thursday. White is a top-10 skeet shooter in the state, where Austin sits at second place in the conference.

White and Shubert are both hunters and they both joined the clay target team as eighth graders so they’ve had a lot of time on the range at the Cedar Valley Conservation Club. Things have clicked for the team this season and Schubert, who is in the top 100 for male and female trap shooters in the state, said that team success has made meet days more fun.

“I think it’s fun to see how far everybody’s come with their shooting. The whole team has gotten better,” Shubert said. “It seems like everybody kind of cheers you on to do your best and you have your family on your side wanting you to do your best.”

White has enjoyed the season as well, although he said sometimes it can get a little nerve racking.

“If it’s a windy day or rainy it could be tough,” White said. “It depends how well you’re doing and you don’t want to think negative.”

Austin has also had some other shooters step up this season as Sam Boregerson is in the top 10 in the conference for skeet shooting, Kassidy Tabor is in the top 25 females in the conference for trap shooting and Lucas Wolfe, Joshua Dyke, Codie Wolfe and Jarod Feifarek are all in the top 25 males for trap shooting in the conference.

“We’ve a had some kids that have been here for a long time and that’s a lot of the reason for our success,” Austin head coach Gus Maxfield said.
