Fire damages home for $40K; Resident escapes unharmed, blaze started in the bedroom of two-story

A Thursday morning house fire caused about $40,000 in damages, but the house was not a total loss.

The Austin Fire Department responded to the fire at 1008 Fifth Ave. NW around 6:45 a.m. and put out the fire shortly after 7 a.m. The state fire marshal said the cause was electrical.

The initial call reported flames in the upstairs of the home and heavy smoke was seen coming out as firefighters arrived on scene.

The fire started in a bedroom of the two-bedroom, two-bath home, according to Fire Chief Jim McCoy.

The house sustained smoke and fire damage to the second floor and water damage to the first floor.

Only one person lived at the home and was uninjured. The Red Cross is helping the resident find a place to stay.
