ROCHESTER — The No. 6 seeded Hayfield boys basketball team got off on the wrong foot and it never got back on track as it lost 82-47 to No. 3 Saint Charles in the Section 1AA quarterfinals in Mayo Civic Center Tuesday.

The Saints (26-2 overall) drilled six three-pointers in the first 10 minutes of the game as they jumped to a 28-7 lead. The Vikings (17-10 overall) had hoped to slow down the pace, but that was out of the question when they fell behind by so much so early.

“We had a list of things we had to do and that wasn’t one of them to have them come out on fire,” Hayfield head coach Chris Pack said. “Early in the game we had turnovers and we gave up offensive rebounds. We needed to keep it in the 50s or 60s to have a chance, then it quickly got away from us and you can’t afford to slow it down.”

The Vikings won 17 of their last 22 games this season and Pack was hoping the team would finish on a strong note. Hayfield junior Trace Tebay had 16 points and senior Aaron Younge finished with 15 points.

“We were 0-5 to start the year and we could’ve cashed it in and forgot about this season,” Pack said. “We didn’t do that and I told them in the second half I didn’t expect them to play any different then they have all year. I was proud of how they competed the whole night through. It just wasn’t our night tonight.”
