The Vikings (14-7 overall) out-rebounded the Rebels (7-12 overall) 39-21 as they took an early lead and they held on. Hayfield sophomore Olivia Matti, who had 14 points, drilled three straight three-pointers early in the first half to ignite an 18-2 Viking run and Hayfield opened the second half on a 8-0 run to go up 40-17.

“I thought we played alright,” Hayfield head coach Fred Kindschy said. “We shot well in the first half and our defense kind of picked it up a little bit. Southland has a nice quality team and they’re quick and athletic.”

Hayfield sophomore Kate Kruger racked up 13 points, six rebounds, six assists and three steals as she impacted the game in a variety of ways. Kruger did most of her offensive damage by getting to the hoop on drives to the basket.

“My shooting isn’t the best so the more that I can get to the basket or set up shooters the better,” Kruger said.

Carrie Rutledge had 10 points, three assists and three steals for Hayfield and Maggie Streightiff had 10 points and four rebounds. The Vikings were coming off a six day break and the last time they played, they knocked off Goodhue.

Hayfield came out running against the Rebels.

“I think we knew they were going to be fast and we had to take it to the basket a lot,” Streightiff said. “We like to get out and run and get the game going.”

Kaysie Allen, who had 10 points, hit a three-pointer to bring Southland within 40-25 with 10:38 left in the game, but Southland never got any closer the rest of the way.

“I’m disappointed on both ends of the ball,” Southland head coach Dean Bendtsen said. “I think our girls are capable of a lot more. We played with them, but we just made too many mistakes. I love what [Kindschy] does up in there in Hayfield. They’re a disciplined team, they hit the boards hard and they get just about every loose ball.”
