A new Miss Austin was officially given her crown and banner during Monday’s City Council meeting.

Mrs. Minnesota 2015 Kate Howe crowned Miss Austin Kaylee Kalbow, who will compete in the 2016 Miss Minnesota Pageant next March.

“I want to be a great role model to this amazing community that I live in and help give little ones something to look up to,” Kaylee told the council. “I am just so honored to be representing you guys.”

Mayor Tom Stiehm also gave Kaylee a key to the city, and she told the council she’ll be speaking about how positive choices — whether it be about fitness or healthy eating — are the foundation of our futures.

Throughout the year as Miss Austin International, Kaylee will speak on her positive choices platform, she’ll make appearances, do special presentations and assist with civic and nonprofit oriented projects.

Kaylee, the daughter of Amy Schaper, is a senior at Austin High School and works at Maurice’s.

Howe lives in Burnsville with her husband, Joe, and their two children. She works as a financial analyst, her platform “Ignite the Imagination” focused on early childhood literacy. Howe said she was excited to see Kaylee beginning her journey as Miss Austin.

“I’m very excited today to crown Kaylee and watch her on her mission,” Howe said.

The Miss International Pageant system recognizes young women for their commitment to professional and community stewardship.

Kaylee is currently seeking sponsorship support as she prepares for the state competition. Those who have already pledged their support include: Accentra Credit Union, Belles and Beaus, Family Eye Care Center, Golden Tress Salon, and Overby Orthodontics.

Anyone interested in sponsoring Kaylee, finding out more information or to schedule an appearance with Kaylee, contact the state office at 952-432-6758.
