Letter: Bicycle safety is always a two-way street

The Vision 2020 Bike/Walk Trail Committee is looking to share some tips on bicycle safety.

There are a number of things both motorists and bicyclists can do to keep our roadways safe. Around half of bicycle-motorist collisions are caused by bicyclists. Bicyclists can avoid crashes by following the rules of the road and obeying traffic signs, biking defensively and predictably, and by communicating intent to motorists.

Crashes caused by motorists are often due to failure to yield, inattention, and obscured vision. Motorists can avoid accidents with bicyclists by being patient when passing bicycles, being aware of younger bike riders and their potentially erratic movements, and by staying alert while driving. As our committee works to expand bicycling resources in the community we hope to make it a safer and more bike friendly place to ride.

Please remember to share the road and that bicycle safety is a two-way street.
