The Wingers and Packers combined for 1,069 total yards and 106 points on Austin’s Homecoming night, but it was one yard the Packers couldn’t get that will haunt them after they fell 56-50 to the Wingers in Art Hass Stadium Friday.

After Jason Stoulil hauled in a 12-yard TD pass and a two-point conversion to tie the game at 50-50 in the first set of overtime possessions, Austin wide receiver Elijah Andersen hauled in a pass and dove forward on a fourth and goal from seven. It appeared Andersen scored a TD that would’ve put Austin up 56-50.

Instead, it was ruled that Andersen fumbled at the goal-line and Red Wing took possession and immediately ended the game on a 10-yard TD run by Samuel Hanson on a sweep.

“That’s out of our control. We thought he scored,” Austin head coach Brett Vesel said of the Andersen catch. “All you have to do is break the plane with the ball and then he fumbled after the fact. On our end of it, we do control hanging on to the ball and maybe it was a great play by their defense.”

Austin took a 42-34 lead with 5:01 left in regulation after Jany Gash hauled in a 20-yard pass on fourth and 11 to set up a one-yard TD run by Brandon Edgar, who ran for 187 yards and three scores.

But the Packers couldn’t close out their first win of the season.

The Wingers (5-2 overall) went 75 yards on nine plays in two and a half minutes on their ensuing possession as Ben Munson hauled in a 15-yard TD pass and Tait Kelly ran in the two-point conversion to tie the game up at 50-50 with 2:24 left in the fourth.

RW had a chance to win the game at the end of regulation as they stopped Austin on downs and drove to the Packer 30-yard line, but Gash picked off a pass on fourth down to force OT.

Gash said it was a tough loss for the Packers to stomach.

“This was the moment we were waiting for,” said Gash, who had 77 receiving yards and a TD. “We’ve just got to finish and we didn’t do that. It really sucks how we didn’t win any games on this field. It hurts a lot.”

Early on, it looked the Packers (0-7 overall) were going to be able to name the final score as they produced TDs on four of their first possessions and they led 28-0 after Brandon Edgar broke open a 46-yard TD run with 9:10 left in the second quarter. The Wingers scored two quick TDs at the end of the first half and Tait Kelly dove in for a 1-yard TD in the third quarter that made it 28-21 Austin and turned the fourth quarter into a dogfight.

The fourth quarter saw the Wingers tally 210 yards and 21 points against a depleted Austin defense that was missing linebacker Jon Gallagher and defensive end Logan Braaten to injuries. In OT, the Wingers scored two TDs and a two-point conversion on sweeps by Hanson.

“Defensively we’re missing some guys right now and the well is getting pretty thin right now,” Vesel said. “Those guys played hard. We knew what [Red Wing] going to run in overtime but they just outplayed us and there’s nothing we can do.”

Jakob Crouch threw for 260 yards with two TDs and an interception and he ran for 88 yards and a TD for Austin.

Austin will play at Faribault 7 p.m. Friday to close out its regular season.

“We’ve just got to continue to get better. We’ve got a chance to win next week and it’s just too bad we couldn’t win one on the new field this year,” Vesel said.
