Football: Top ranked Superlarks sneak past No. 2 Lions

The top two ranked teams in nine man football traded blows back and forth all night and it was a missed PAT that made all of the difference as the No. 1 ranked Superlarks held off No. 2 Spring Grove (7-1 overall) 21-20 in Spring Grove Friday.

The Lions scored on the last play of the third quarter to pull within 21-20, but the Superlarks (8-0 overall) blocked the PAT. The Lions had the ball with a chance to win the game, but after GM corner back Michael Stejskal allowed two catches on out routes, he jumped the third one for a game ending interception.

“It was a great game,” GM head coach Gary Sloan said. “It seemed like we’d get ahead and then they’d get us on big plays. We just couldn’t get away from them.”

All three of the Lions scores came on passes of more than 50 yards. GM took its 21-14 lead when Christophor Bain threw to Terrell Rieken on a half-back pass for a gain of 49 yards. Bain scored four players later with a one-yard plunge on fourth and goal.

Bain had 162 yards of offense and three total TDs for the Larks.
