The Austin Bruins will help out some furry friends when the team plays the Minot Minotauros on Friday.

The Bruins’ 7:05 p.m. game will be Humane Society Night, and Mower County Humane Society representatives will be on hand to take donations and talk about the shelter’s mission.

“These kind of things help get the message out,” Mower County Humane Society President Peggy Olson said.

The humane society is selling discounted tickets for the game at $11 for adults and $8 for kids, compared to the usual $15 and $12. A portion of the proceeds will benefit the shelter.

Humane society volunteers will be on hand to accept monetary and supply donations, while also promoting the shelter. Olson noted the Mower County Humane Society isn’t affiliated with the national Humane Society, so it gets no funding from it, the state, county or the city — something she said many people don’t realize.

“We’re all donation driven and we’re all volunteer driven,” Olson said. “I think it’s very important that people understand that.”

Volunteers will also sell humane society T-shirts, sweatshirts and tumblers.

The Mower County Humane Society is a no kill shelter that spays and neuters all pets it adopts out to help keep the pet population down.

“We really appreciate the fact that the Bruins are doing this for us,” Olson said.

Tickets will be for sale during the humane society’s open house from 4:30 to 6 p.m. today at the shelter, 101 22nd St. SE in Austin. The discounted tickets are also available at Hy-Vee, Jim’s MarketPlace Foods, Games People Play and the Holiday Inn.

The Bruins and Mower County Humane Society already partnered this past weekend. The Bruins hosted a meet and greet with players and mascot Bruiser at the shelter on Sunday, which also served as a chance for people to check out animals at the shelter.
