The No. 3 seeded Packer boys soccer team had barely broken a sweat by the time it had put away No. 14 Stewartville (4-12 overall) in its Section 1A tournament opener in Art Hass Stadium Tuesday.

Matias Parada and Ryan Kempen each scored two first half goals as the Packers won 8-0.

Austin scored its first four goals in the first nine minutes of the game.

“We wanted to come out play hard and put them away so we wouldn’t have to worry about it the rest of the game,” Kempen said. “It’s definitely still fun. I was enjoying it out there and the team was enjoying it out there.”

Corbin Munger, Sean Baker, Ochan Ochogi and Kory Potach also scored goals in the win for the Packers (8-5-4 overall) as they out-shot the Tigers 21-2. Josh Brehmer had two second half saves for Austin as he was one of several players to get some rare varsity playing time.

“We got everybody in and some guys that haven’t had varsity experience before got to play,” Austin head coach Jens Levisen said. “That’s something you kind of like to do to get some of the jitters out.”

The Packers will host No. 6 seeded Kasson-Mantorville in a Section 1A quarterfinal game 7 p.m. Thursday. That matchup could be the final home game of the year for the Packers, who beat KM 1-0 Sept. 14.

Levisen said the Packers are focused on the Komets and they’re not looking ahead.

“You’ve got to win every game,” he said. “It’s one game at a time and when that game is over, then we get to talk about what’s next. In the section tournament anyone can upset anybody. Your seed may give you home field, but that’s it.”
