Best Bets: Running with the Flash this weekend

Get your inner Batman ready to fight the falling leaves this weekend. With the Superhero Dash, festivals, some good farming experience, and a plethora of reading material, this weekend is sure to get everyone ready to fight crime and get in the fall spirit.

1. Friends of the Library Fall Used Book Sale

6:30-8:30 p.m. pm Thursday, 10 a.m.—5 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, Austin Public Library

The Fall Used Book Sale is sponsored by the Friends of the Austin Public Library. All proceeds fund library programs and projects. Thursday is the special members only used book presale, and people can join the Friends of the Library for $10 per household to attend. Friday and Saturday are open to the public, and the $5 bag sale will be from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. Saturday, and bags will be provided.

2. ‘Into the Woods’

7:30-9:30 p.m. Thursday-Saturday, 2 p.m. Sunday, Frank W. Bridges Theatre

Riverland Community College’s theater department will perform the musical “Into the Woods” onstage at the Frank W. Bridges Theatre. Fairy tales collide when several characters head into the woods to pursue their wishes. Along the way, the characters discover wishes are rarely as simple as they seem as the consequences of their actions return to haunt them. The play is suggested for ages 10 and up. Tickets are $16 or $50 for a season pass and may be purchased by going to www.riverland.edu/theatre/tickets or at the box office in person or by phone. 3. Open Door Health Center Open House

11 a.m.-5 p.m. on Friday, Austin Community Learning Center Special Education

Open Door Health Center is a mobile clinic that provides care for everyone. Tour mobile units, meet the clinical team, learn about the ODHC’s services, discounts and schedules, receive a free health screening and more. There will be refreshments and activities for children. 4. Salvation Army Volunteer Appreciation Dinner

5-9 p.m. Friday, Salvation Army Dining Hall

This dinner is free for anyone that has volunteered in the last year. Brad Trahan will be the speaker and there will be a silent auction and vendors. The theme is “You are an essential piece of our puzzle.” For more information, call Kris at 507-437-4566, ext. 104.

5. Halloween Warm-Up

6:50-10 p.m. on Friday, 5:30-8 p.m. on Saturday, Jay C. Hormel Nature Center

This annual kid-friendly Halloween event will feature a 45-minute hike and participants will enjoy Halloween and nature skits performed by creatures, critters and spirits of the night. Then relax in Ruby Rupner Auditorium with cider and treats. The night is especially designed to appeal to children ages 4 to 11 who are accompanied by an adult, but all ages are welcome. Groups of 25 are led into the forest to meet the assorted spirits that reside there. Time slots can be chosen at the purchase of tickets, which are $6 per person and are available through Friday at Super Fresh Produce, Bakery and Garden Center, 2104 Fourth St. NW, 507-437-6554.

6. Winona Diocesan Council of Catholic Women Convention

8:30 a.m.-3 p.m. on Saturday, St. Augustines

The event will feature several speakers, including: Dona Sanders, who will speak on living and sharing the joy of Jesus, Evonne Seivert, who will speak on finding humor in every day life. The cost is $20, and pre-registration can be sent to Kitty Kerrins at Po. Box 74, Grand Meadow, MN, 55936, or register the day of. Registration forms are available at several Catholic churches around the area.

7. Second annual Superhero Dash

10 a.m.-1 p.m. on Saturday, 100 8th Ave SE

Don the capes and masks to show off the super powers at this event co-hosted by the Community Against Bullying (CAB) and the Austin Police Officer Association. There will be a one-mile kiddie run prior to the 5K, and the course will be marked with signs and volunteers on the route. Wear appropriate footwear and ensure costumes don’t inhibit vision or movement. 8. Iblings Family Farm Experience

10 a.m.-4 p.m. on Saturday, Iblings Family Farm

This Fun on the Farm event features pony rides, wagon rides, roping, pumpkin painting and more. Come back at dark for a family outdoor movie and pack a lunch too. The cost is $20 per family.
