We’re gearing up for two of our big annual events: Day of Caring and the coat drive. But don’t wait until the fall to get involved with the United Way of Mower County. Starting right now, here’s how you can help us make sure both of our events are more successful than ever.

This year’s Day of Caring is set for Oct. 10. From 8 a.m. to 12 p.m., United Way sends volunteers to homes and non-profits all over the county to assist with projects like window washing, storm window installation, paint touch-up, brush removal, raking, and more. Last year, we completed 35 projects county-wide and this year we’re raising the bar and hoping to complete 50! If you or anyone you know could benefit from such a project, visit our website at www.uwmower.org or call our office at 507-437-2313 to register your project. Our project registration deadline is Aug. 20. We’re looking forward to hearing how we can help you or someone close to you in the community.

To help us make sure our coat drive is a success you can start collecting today. Keep an eye out at garage sales and stores for sales or good deals on new or gently-used kids’ coats, hats, scarves, gloves, mittens and boots. The coat drive benefits children in Mower County who don’t have coats or outerwear to protect them during the harsh winter months. On Sept. 20 we’re beginning collection and putting collection boxes out at various spots throughout the community. We will also be accepting donations at the United Way offices located at 201 S. Main St. in Austin.

Just interested in volunteering? No problem. We need volunteers too. All volunteer opportunities for Day of Caring and coat drive will be listed on our website. Day of Caring volunteers have until Sept. 15 to sign-up to assist with Day of Caring projects like the ones listed above. Coat drive volunteer opportunities include collection box pick-up, coat laundering, sorting and delivery. So mark your calendars with these important dates and join United Way of Mower County today in creating lasting change in our community.
