Latino families got an education Tuesday at Riverland Community College after staff from the state Department of Education and the Mexican Consulate gave a presentation on the DREAM Act and the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) laws that allow the children of undocumented immigrants access to higher education.

“We need you as students to be aware of the opportunities so you can make our communities a better place,” Riverland President Adenuga Atewologun told more than 50 people gathered inside Riverland’s library Wednesday.

The presentation included members of Riverland’s Be Your Best program, which gives first-time college students or students from underprivileged families a taste of college academics over the summer. Riverland has 23 Be Your Best participants this year.
