AHS grad swims in National Senior games

Austin grad Dr. LaRue Johnson made his way back to Minnesota as he recently participated in the National Senior games.

LaRue swam for Austin High School from 1951-1953 and swam for the University of Minnesota from 1955-1957  and he now lives in Howard, Colo. He came back to Minnesota to swim in the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center in Minneapolis in six events over three days. Johnson won four medals and two ribbons as he swam in the 80-84 age bracket.

Johnson won gold in the 100-yard backstroke, silver in the 50-yard and 200-yard backstroke, bronze in the 100-yard individual medley and he took home fifth place ribbons in the 50-yard and 100-yard freestyles.

Johnson had family and friends, as well his wife Mary on hand to cheer him on.

The National Senior Games occur only on odd numbered years and entry requires qualification in a state sponsored senior games in the previous even numbered year. Interested Minnesota participants should go to: www.mnseniorgames.com as well as www.nsga.com for the nationals.
