Listen In: A listen to Marty O’Reilly & the Old Soul Orchestra

The third annual Saturday night concert of the Austin ArtWorks Center — now the Dick Schindler Celebration — will feature plenty of new faces after Cloud Cult anchored the first two years.

Despite a fresh slate of bands, there’s again no shortage of talent coming to Marcusen Park for the 7:30 p.m. Aug. 22 show.

California-based Marty O’Reilly & the Old Soul Orchestra is set to bring the group’s blend of bluesy Americana and folk rock to Austin. Violinist Chris Lynch, an Austin native and 2000 Austin High School graduate, perhaps described the group’s sound best when he described it as gypsy jazz.

To get better acquainted with these old souls, check out their 2014 debut album “Pray for Rain.” The album’s foundation is based in blues and American roots music with Lynch’s violins and Jeff Kissell’s upright bass backing O’Reilly’s raspy, gravely vocals and bluesy, crisp guitars.

The group’s debut album produces a full sound and reveals a group of musicians who are in sync with each other.

“Smokestack Lightning” gives off a Tom Waits vibe and develops into a great jam by the end of the track. The group recorded a live studio version of “Letters” for a contest submission to NPR’s Tiny Desk Concert, which is available on Youtube.

“Letters” is a swinging, folksy tune that is a prime example of O’Reilly’s story like lyrics. Opening track “Dempsey” is another tune that reveals O’Reilly’s storytelling lyrics.

The group is about to release a followup EP, “Preach ‘Em Now.” Though the five track EP’s wide release is slated for an October wide release, band members say it should be available at the Austin ArtWorks show.

On the EP, the band takes a modest step away from the gypsy jazz vibe of “Pray for Rain” toward a heavier rock ‘n’ roll influence with hints of extended jams, especially on the title track.

“I Heard the Angels” opens with sparse musical backing to O’Reilly’s hoarse croons, before the instruments expand into a robust, slow chorus that sets aside the swinging jazz of prior tracks.
