The Austin Post 91 baseball team had an 11-game winning streak come to an end, but it stayed in the driver’s seat for the top seed in the District tournament when it split a doubleheader at Rochester Century Tuesday.

Austin dropped the first game 3-2, but it bounced back to win the nightcap 7-3 to stay in first place over the second place A’s (6-3 District).

Alex Ciola tripled in three runs on a two-strike pitch to put Austin (15-2 overall, 7-1 District) up 4-0 in the top of the first inning in the second game. Ciola was 4-for-6 on the day.

“In the first game [Ciola] swung really well and he definitely had the big hit in the second game,” Post 91 head coach Andy Swank said. “It was the at bat of the game for us.”

Austin’s Jake Reinartz allowed a couple of unearned runs and one earned run in the first inning of the opening game, but he pitched five scoreless innings after that. Nik Gasner allowed three earned runs in six innings in the second game.

“The pitching was excellent. After an error in the first inning, Reinartz shut them down and Gasner threw very well for us,” Swank said. “I think all day we weren’t exactly playing our best baseball and to pull out a win when you’re not [playing your best] was big.”
