Quandt broke the record of 15.81 in the 100-meter hurdles set in 2008 by AHS grad Jessica Webber. Quandt topped the record first in preliminaries when she ran the event in 15.44 seconds. Quandt ran the finals in 15.62 seconds, which was still faster than the previous record, and she beat Mankato West’s Christa Benson by .23 of a second to win the race.

Quandt credited the weather for helping her time and she also came into the meet on a mission.

“I like to get myself angry before I run, because it helps me run faster,” Quandt said. “I thought about how close I was to the record in our last meet and how much I wanted to break it. When I saw the clock, it was a great feeling.”

Quandt said winning the 100-hurdles at the Big Nine meet is a big boost for her confidence and now she’s focused on running even faster at the Section 1AA meet.

Austin’s other first place finisher was sophomore Odongonga Obala, who won the 400-meter dash with a time of 59.89 seconds. It was Oballa’s best time of the season and she won the race by about a second.

“Her endurance is getting better,” Austin head coach Nancy Jones said of Oballa. “She makes it look so smooth and easy. She really has great running form.”

Austin’s Kendall Hackensmith was All Big Nine honorable mention with a third place finish in the 300-meter hurdles, and Madison Overby earned All-Big Nine honors in the 1600-meter run, where she took third, and the 800-meter run, where she took third.
