Heiny

She was born Nov. 12, 1922, in Albert Lea to Edward and Millie (Lerum) Wangen. The family moved to Austin where Marjorie attended Austin Public Schools and graduated from Austin High School in 1940. She moved to St. Paul and worked as a bookkeeper before returning to Austin to marry Ivan Victor Heiny upon his return from the Pacific Theater in World War II. The couple raised three children: Dean, Jan, and Bruce.

Margie was an active member of First United Methodist Church, the Koinonia (Questers) couple’s club, Bible study group, and Methodist Circle. Marge worked for the Mower County Sheriff’s Department and assisted three Mower County Sheriffs — Carmen Halstenson, Nolan Dugan, and Wayne Goodnature. She volunteered for the American Red Cross for several decades and was also a volunteer for the St. Olaf Hospital Auxiliary.

Marge was an excellent cook and homemaker. Family was the center of her world, and all those lucky enough to be part of her family felt loved, valued, and supported. Holidays were a highlight with good food, laughter and fun. Marjorie provided much unsung gracious support and love in helping to raise six grandchildren. Her children and grandchildren will forever cherish the lessons learned from her gentle wisdom and subtle Norwegian humor.

Marjorie never stopped learning. She began taking piano lessons and learned to golf in her 60s. She was an avid reader and loved crossword puzzles. She loved to play cards, especially bridge and 500, and was known for her calm demeanor when playing a grand slam hand, or making a 10 bid in 500. She enjoyed fishing on the Caribou Trail with son Dean and joining him for the sunrise on Green Lake.

Marjorie is survived by her children: Dean of New London, Minnesota, Jan (Jack) Waller of Austin, Minnesota, and Bruce (Danielle) Heiny of Austin, Minnesota; grandchildren: Joe Waller, Jim Waller and Jane (Waller) Wisker, Ruth (Heiny) Donahue, Julia (Heiny) Dankworth, Eric Heiny; great-grandchildren: Sabin and Everett Donahue, Jack and Benjamin Wisker, Nora Waller; brother, Rev. Russell (Norma) Wangen of Austin; sisters-in-law: Fran Wangen of Phoenix, Arizona, Florence Wangen of Spicer, Minnesota; Alice Tomaschko of Austin, Minnesota; many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Ivan V. Heiny, Jr.; brothers and sisters: Orville, Elaine, Richard, Esther, Leo, Robert, and John; brothers-in-law: Don Shroyer and Franklin Tomaschko, and sister-in-law, Gretchen Wangen; many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews.

A memorial service celebrating her life will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, May 20, 2015, at First United Methodist Church in Austin with the Rev. Marilee Benson officiating. After a luncheon, interment will follow in Oakwood cemetery, Austin. Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday evening at Clasen-Jordan Mortuary and at the church on Wednesday morning from 10 a.m. until the time of the service.
