Hayfield baseball team knocks off Blossoms

The No. 2 seeded Hayfield baseball team did all of its damage early and it hung on to knock off No. 3 seeded Blooming Prairie 6-4 in a Section 1A West quarterfinal game in Hayfield Thursday.

The Vikings (15-5 overall) tallied six runs with two outs in the third inning, but BP (4-16 overall) ended up having runners on first and third, while trailing by two in the top of the seventh. BP popped out to end the game and head coach Matt Kittelson was happy with how his team battled back.

“[The six runs in the third] is a credit to them. We didn’t make any errors, they just hit the ball well. We didn’t do anything to hurt ourselves,” Kittelson said. “The biggest thing is we didn’t give up. When you’ve had a season where you have had very few wins some teams might cash it in for the season, but they didn’t. They fought back and gave us an opportunity.”

Hayfield senior Cam Rutledge picked up the win as he scattered six hits and allowed three earned runs. Hayfield head coach Kasey Krekling said Rutledge gutted the game out in the seventh.

“We were able to hang on. Blooming was scrappy and they never gave up,” Krekling said. “He did struggle with his control of his off-speed. He battled through that and did as well as he could. He was glad to get out of there because his pitch count was high.”

Hayfield ail play No. 3 seeded Medford 10 a.m. Saturday in the Section 1A West semifinals in Riverland.
