Gov. Mark Dayton proclaimed May 21 as Character Recognition Day in Minnesota.

To recognize the occasion, Ellis Middle School was one of 12 schools and four community programs to receive awards from Synergy & Leadership Exchange at the Character Recognition Awards ceremony at the State Capitol. The awards recognized excellence in character development.

Ellis received a Promising Practices Award for “Ellis NJHS Contributes Globally” — a practice where the National Junior Honor Society students built compassion and caring within their school by conducting a shoe drive, which benefited those in need and raised funds for a global service learning activity.

The Minnesota Promising Practices award recognizes schools that have developed and implemented a practice promoting character development in their schools. These practices must be specific, unique and encompass at least one of the 11 principles. The practices are shared on the Synergy website where other schools can learn about and implement them in their own school.
