ADAMS —One day after they were held hitless, the Rebels found themselves in a 3-0 hole after the top of the first inning against Plainview-Elgin-Millville (1-8 overall) in Adams Friday.

The Southland baseball team didn’t flinch and it didn’t pout. It went to work and walked away with a 12-3 win.

The Rebels (6-3 overall) tallied three runs in the bottom of the first to tie the game after Josh Anderson ignited the bats with an RBI triple. Southland added five more runs in the third to take an 8-3 lead.

Jared Landherr doubled in two runs in the third inning rally.

Southland had a batting practice session before Friday’s game and it certainly paid off.

“We made sure to get the nerves out,” Anderson said. “We just relaxed and hit the ball. It was good to get back to hitting.”

Southland pitcher James Landherr allowed two hits and two walks in the first inning and he allowed just six hits and zero walks over the last six innings. Southland catcher Chris Webber said the team had to calm down James early on.

“We just had to relax and get James relaxed. He was kind of stressed out early,” Webber said.

Southland started two freshmen, an eighth grader and a sophomore on Friday and those young players have done a lot of growing up this season. Southland head coach Scott Retterath said it’s been quite the journey.

“I think at first they were pretty overwhelmed with what went on up here and not really knowing what to expect,” Retterath said. “I think for the most part they’ve grown a lot in the first ten games. They just have to work on reacting on what to do instead of thinking and then doing it.”
