Students learn the power of silence

Students at Ellis Middle School learned the power of silence April 23.

On April 16, National Junior Honor Society students participated in a project called “We Are Silent.” They raised funds for causes in developing countries such as Haiti and Kenya. Each student chose a personal cause they wanted to champion, bring attention to and speak to with silence. They attempted to be silent for the entire school day.

Instructional staff worked with students to find alternative ways for them to communicate so they could maintain their silence for the day and still accomplish their assignments.

Each student had a laminated statement of what they were doing and the cause that they stood up for to let everyone know they were participating in the event.
