Best Bets: Film, comedy show kickoff a busy Austin weekend

Get ready to enjoy the nightlife this weekend with a comedy show, a circus and the fifth annual taste of Mower County. With the warm evening breeze, the sun staying out longer, and the talents and arts of Austin peaking out for spring, there’s sure to be plenty to enjoy this weekend.

1. ‘Farmland’ Feature Film

7-9 p.m., Thursday, Paramount Theater, 125 Fourth Ave. NE

“Farmland” gives viewers a first-hand glimpse into the lives of young farmers and ranchers, their high-risk/high-reward jobs and their passion for a way of life that has been passed down from generation to generation. “Farmland” takes an intimate look at the lives of six farmers and ranchers in their 20s, all of whom are now responsible for running their business. The program is free and open to the public.

2. Comedy Show: Punchline Chuckles

12-1:30 p.m., Friday, Mower County Senior Center, 400 Third Ave. NE

Enjoy the fun and frolics with a preview of the evening comedy show at the Historic Paramount Theatre. Enjoy the comedy of Jeff Larson while feasting on this month’s delights — chicken salad over shoestring potatoes with a muffin. Cost for members is $5, nonmembers is $6. 3. Brew, Beards and B.S.

5-10 p.m., Friday, Austin Holiday Inn Conference Center, 1701 Fourth St. NW

Show off the beard proudly and enjoy a beer-tasting featuring brews from at least seven small breweries, and you can vote for your favorite brew. Participate in activities while enjoying food and music by Whalen and the Willows. For more information, call 507-433-8000.

4. Taste of Wine and Beer

5-8 p.m., Friday, Eagles Club of Austin, 107 11th St. NE

Enjoy appetizers and vendors for shopping enjoyment while testing wine and beer. Tickets are $15. Contact Mary Jo at 507-437-8773. The event is sponsored by Apollo Liquors, Eagles Club and Zonta Club of Austin.

6. Comedy Night

7:30-9:30 p.m., Friday, Paramount Theatre, 125 Fourth Ave. NE

Midwest Emmy Award Winning comedian/magician David Harris will headline the Paramount Theater for the first time. Harris has performed professionally for over 20 years. The Minneapolis resident entertains full time as a comedian and a magician across the Midwest and U.S. Tickets are $10 in advance or $12 at the door. 6. Ticoline Du Sarousch Circus

7:30-9 p.m., Friday, Minnesota National Guard Armory in Austin, 800 21st St. NE

Enjoy an animal-free circus with jugglers, acrobats, clowns and lots of fun. Two free child admissions will go with each paid adult ticket. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

7. Celebrate Kay Toe Boe

10-11 a.m., Saturday, Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, 1600 W. Oakland Ave.

The Karenni community of Austin invites community members to join them in celebrating Kay Toe Boe. Karenni believe that Kay Toe Boe is a God-given gift to the human society for social and economic practices. Karenni celebrate this gift by praying for good crops and farming, for family, good health and social networking. They welcome the new year with a clean spirit and leave behind the bad one, moving on with positive connections.

8. Stepping Out For Autism Walk

10 a.m.-12 p.m., Saturday, Hormel Historic Home, 208 Fourth Ave. NW

This is the fourth annual fundraiser sponsored by the Hormel Historic Home. All proceeds will support area youth at the Hormel Historic Home Autism Camp. Lunch will be available at 11 a.m. for a free-will offering. Entertainment will be provided by Good Vibrations and the event will feature a Bragen Rights photo booth. 9. Forte Milers Barbershop Chorus

10. Fifth Annual Taste of Mower County

4-7 p.m., Sunday, Austin Holiday Inn, 1701 Fourth St. NW

Enjoy unlimited tastings of signature items from Mower County’s finest home and restaurant chefs. Enjoy a wine tasting, cash bar, live and silent auction, door prizes and entertainment.
