Best Bets: A weekend filled with treasures

Get ready to find treasures at great prices this weekend. With city-wide rummage sales, a livestock show, celebrating veterans and a health party all about women, something is bound to catch the eye this weekend.

1. Last Days in Vietnam Screening

5-9 p.m., Thursday, Historic Paramount Theater, 125 4th Ave NE

KSMQ public television, VFW Post 1216, and area chapters of American Legion and DAV will host a screening event of “Last Days in Vietnam,” an Academy Award nominated documentary made by American Experience Films. The movie will air on KSMQ in May. The screening is free to the public and will honor all area Vietnam veterans. A social hour will start at 5 p.m., and a short program will start at 6:30 p.m., followed by a 60-minute version of the documentary shown at the Paramount Theatre. The event is free and open to the public.

2. Austin City-Wide Rummage Sale

8 a.m.-4 p.m., Friday and Saturday, Austin and Brownsdale, Minnesota

One person’s junk is another’s treasure in Austin and Brownsdale this weekend. The Austin city-wide rummage sales will be set up on Main Street in Austin on Saturday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Rummage sales can be set up on Main Street for the annual sale. Sales space is free but limited with a first-come, first-serve basis. Contact Jeanne Anderson at Evanson’s Hallmark, 507-433-8111, for more information or to reserve a place. The Downtown Rummage Sale is organized by the Downtown Retailers Committee of the Austin Area Chamber of Commerce. The Brownsdale city-wide rummage sales will also take place this weekend, and maps can be picked up at CHS/ Greenway in Brownsdale.

3. 16th Annual Women’s Health Care Symposium

9-11:30 a.m., Saturday, Hormel Historic Home, 208 4th Ave NW

Mayo Clinic Health System providers from Austin will present information on osteoporosis, spine fractures, healthy aging as a woman, and how care teams can enhance care. A light breakfast will be served. The symposium is free and open to women of all ages. Space is limited — early registration is recommended. For more information or to register, call 507-379-2046.

4. Spring Used Book Sale

10 a.m.-5 p.m., Friday and Saturday, Austin Public Library, 323 4th Ave NE

The Spring Used Book Sale will be put on by the AAUW and Friends of the Library. From 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. on Saturday will be a bag sale. Cost is $5 to fill a bag. The sale will have CDs, DVDs and audiobooks, as well as many books.

5. Welcome Meal for Anglican Karen Visitors

5:30-7 p.m., Saturday, Christ Church, 301 3rd Ave NW

Christ Church invites people for fellowship and a free, traditional meal prepared by Anglican Karen visitors from the Twin Cities. The public is also invited to return Sunday at 10 a.m. to hear the guests speak after the religious service. For more information, call 507-433-3782.

6. 8th MN Junior Spring Classic Beef Show

3-7 p.m. Friday, 7:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m. Saturday, 8:30 a.m. Sunday, Mower County Fairgrounds, 700 12th St SW

The Minnesota Junior Spring Classic (MJSC) is an educational not-for-profit organization that encourages youth from around Minnesota and surrounding states to participate in a junior livestock show each year. 7. Brownsdale Fire Department Fireman’s Breakfast

8 a.m.-1 p.m., Sunday, Brownsdale Fire Station, 402 Mill St S, Brownsdale

The event is a free-will donation fundraiser that will raise money for a new Jaws of Life system. The breakfast will serve: French toast, pancakes, biscuits and gravy, scrambled eggs, sausage, coffee, or milk.
