Girls in pretty dresses, guys in tuxedos, a high school gym and lots of dancing all lead to one thing: prom.

Austin Public Schools is holding the high school junior and senior prom this Saturday. Grand March will start at 7:30 p.m. in Knowlton Auditorium, and the doors will open at 6:30 p.m. for parents and community members. Grand March costs $2 for audience members and is open to the public. Prom will take place afterward at Austin High School.

“I hope the students take away a night that they’re going to remember,” Prom Director Zach Herman said. “A night that, it’s not just another prom for them.”

This year’s prom theme is “Around the World in One Night.” Students will step out of an “airplane” and walk through different cities and places on their way down the red carpet, including Hollywood, Los Angeles, Tokyo, Japan, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Egypt and Paris. This year’s prom will also have a new disc jockey and more decorations in the gym.

Herman encouraged audience members to purchase tickets early, since in past years the auditorium has filled up quickly.

“It gets busy in there for sure,” he said.

Tickets will be available at the Austin High School Cashier’s Office or at the door.

Herman hoped audience members will keep in mind the hard work students and the Prom Committee put into the decorations and creating this year’s prom.

“We really appreciate the effort that students [use] their own time to do it,” he said.
