Richard Stanley Dowd, 85, died on Saturday, Feb. 28, 2015, at Good Samaritan Society in Albert Lea.

He was born on May 11, 1929, in Albert Lea, the son of Harvey N. and Henrietta B. (Larson) Dowd. He graduated from Scarville High School, Scarville, Iowa, and went on for training at Gale Institute (Brown Institute) in Minneapolis. Stan married Wanda A. Nelson on Feb. 4, 1951, at the First Presbyterian Church in Albert Lea. They had just celebrated 64 years together.

He entered the U.S. Army in March of 1951, where he served until his honorable discharge in March of 1953. While in the service Stan had served in the Signal Corp as a teletype operator.

Following his years of service, Stan and Wanda made their home in Albert Lea.

Stan worked at Wilson & Co./Farmstead as a receiving clerk from 1952 until retiring in 1990. He had also worked as a meat cutter at “Wayne’s Grocery Store” on South Broadway for more than eight years. He was a member of the senior center, American Legion and very active in the First Presbyterian Church. Stan loved to visit and enjoyed keeping up with all his relatives, neighbors and friends.

Mr. Dowd is survived by his loving wife Wanda of Albert Lea; three children: Janet (Dan) Hooker of Austin, Minnesota, Ronald Dowd (Debbie Williams) of Farmington, Minnesota, and Julie Dowd of Blaine, Minnesota; three grandchildren: Carolyn (Todd) Dube, Christopher Hooker and fiancé Melissa, and Jamie (Nathan) Coleman; five great grandchildren: Alex, Michael and Lauren Dube, Zoe and Katelyn Coleman; brother Donald Dowd of Albert Lea; and sisters-in-law and brother-in-law: Mary Dowd, and Ardis Jensen both of Albert Lea, Sherman and Patricia Nelson of Tucson, Arizona, Mary Sue Dowd of Albert Lea; and many nieces and nephews.

Stan was preceded in death by his parents Harvey and Henrietta Dowd; his sister Beulah Martinson Randall; brother Robert Dowd; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law: Hubert Martinson, Mac Randall, Marge Dowd, Nila and Earl Taylor, and Oliver Jensen.

Funeral services for Stan will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 7, 2015, at the First Presbyterian Church in Albert Lea. The Rev. Dwight Netzer will officiate. Interment will be in Hillcrest Cemetery. Military Honors will be accorded by Albert Lea Veteran’s Organizations. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. on Friday at Bonnerup Funeral Service, Albert Lea, and one hour before services at the church.
