What happens when three fairy godmothers are asked to retire?

They go on a quest to save the princess, stop the witch, restore the kingdom and more in “Three Fairy Godmothers,” the latest production from Mathbox Children’s Theatre.

“It’s really fun,” director Janet Anderson said. “It’s fun working with a lot of veteran Matchbox actors and newcomers on this show.”

“Three Fairy Godmothers” plays at 7 p.m. Friday, March 27, and at 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, March 28 and 29.

Chosen as part of Matchbox’s 40th season, this fast-paced comedy fantasy was first produced by MCT in 1981. Paul Burger, the actor who played the son way back then, has aged gracefully into the role of King Stoutheart, as Anderson puts it. He is also the set designer and technical director. Penny Kinney directed the 1981 production and this time has taken on the role of Hortense, leader of the very funny godmother trio along with Sue Heimsness Petersen as Hoplandria and Coni Nelson as Hepsabah.

This is Anderson’s 24th play as a director, but she’s added an opportunity for several veterans to cameo in the play.

Since the flamboyant castle cook has just three lines, she invited actors Angela Donovan, Lia Culbert, Janet Anderson, Cameron Davis, Cindy Bellrichard and Jenny Dreyer to return to the Matchbox stage.

MCT tickets are just $5 for kids ages 14 and younger and $7 for adults. Advance tickets are available online at austinareaarts.org and will be sold at the door. All seating is general admission. Contact Matchbox Children’s Theatre at 507-437-9078 with questions.

In addition, audience members, former actors, directors and technicians are encouraged to share their Matchbox memories for a special 40th anniversary project. Leave them at the Paramount,   post on MCT Facebook or email to info@matchboxchildrenstheatre.org.
