Best Bets: Warm weekend fun

Get ready to soak up the sun during the first spring-like weekend of 2015. With highs in the 50s and 60s, the weekend features a 5K, a piano concert and baseball. Do some spring cleaning with the employees at the Cooperative Response Center and visit their rummage sale. With so many fun things and so much sun, there’s no excuse to stay inside this weekend.

1. Deuces Wild Dueling Pianos

7:30 to 9:30 p.m., Thursday, Historic Paramount Theatre

Join Dave Eichholz and Ted Manderfeld for a night of musical shenanigans as the sought after dueling piano act will perfume a high-energy mix of comedy and music and get the audience in on the fun. Often described by fans as “unforgettable,” Deuces Wild delivers a wide and family-friendly range of music and genres, from “Sweet Caroline” to “Over the Rainbow.” Tickets are $20. 2. CRC fourth annual Employee Rummage Sale and Expo

8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Friday, Austin Holiday Inn Ballroom

Cooperative Response Center employees will join together to sell their gently used items to raise funds for Habitat for Humanity of Freeborn and Mower Counties. Vendors will also be on hand to sell their products, including Scentsy, Soap by Dawn, Stampin’ Up, Thirty-One, Girl Scout cookies, and chair massages by Riverland Community College Massage Therapy. 3. Crackers and Milk

2 to 3 p.m., Friday, Village Cooperative

“Crackers and Milk,” a book by Arlene Nelson, will be presented by Nelson’s sister, Shirley Lee. The book tells the story of Nelson’s mother surviving the early 20th Century rural Midwest with her siblings, as they overcome many obstacles.

4. Relay For Life of Mower County Kickoff

9 to 11 a.m., Saturday, Our Savior’s Lutheran Church

The American Cancer Society Relay For Life of Mower County will hold a kickoff for the annual event on Saturday, March 14, 2015, from at 9 to 11 a.m. at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, 1600 W. Oakland Ave, Austin. The Society is inviting people who are interested in learning more and getting involved in the event to attend. Relay For Life will be held July 25 at the Mower County Fairgrounds.

5. Annual Free Kids Baseball Clinic

9 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturday, Austin High School Gyms

The event is conducted by Austin All Star Youth Baseball and Austin Youth Baseball. Registration will start at 9 a.m. There will be two sessions: one from 10 a.m. to noon and a second from 12:30 to 2 p.m. Lunch will be provided at no cost. 6. Shamrockin’ Run

12 to 1 p.m., Saturday, Pacelli High School

Pacelli Catholic Schools will hold the Shamrockin’ 5K Run/Walk on Saturday, March 14. The race will begin at 2 p.m., with a one-mile fun run/walk. There will be a chipped race by Record Pace Timing, and the results will be online after the race. For preregistered runners, the swag bag and packet pickup will be Friday night from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. and Saturday from 12 to 1:30 p.m. Free childcare is provided for runners. There will be awards in many age groups after the race at 3:30 p.m., and a post race party at the B & J Bar and Grill with food specials. Participants may get a free beverage after the race at the B & J with a bib, and there will be entertainment for all ages. Registrations will be taken up until 1:30 p.m. Saturday.
