Girls hockey: Packers give Rockets a good fight in regular season finale

The Austin girls hockey team had a solid effort against the best team in the Big Nine conference to close out its regular season, but the Packers lost 3-2 in Riverside Arena Thursday.

Rebecca Freiburger scored the game-winner for the Rockets (20-2-2 overall, 16-0 Big Nine) with 7:30 left in the game.

Austin (11-12-2 overall, 8-10-2 Big Nine) had tied the game at 2-2 early in the third period when Chloe Summerfield scored her second goal of the night.

Mara Overby had 52 saves for Austin, which had 22 shots on goal.

“The girls played an outstanding game again,” Austin head coach Brett Vesel said. “They played the entire game with great effort really limited [JM] offensively. Mara played an outstanding game in nets.”

Myia Hoium and Mackenzie Trimble had assists for the Packers.

The Packers finish the season in seventh place in the Big Nine and they will open the Section 1A tournament Wednesday night.
