Austin is again looking to help connect new residents to the community.

The Austin Area Chamber of Commerce is inviting new residents to participate in a series of events designed to showcase Austin and better connect them to the community.

The second round of Awesome Austin events begin Jan. 15 and consists of three separate events that introduce newcomers to each other, community leaders and major aspects of the community. There is no charge to participate.

“It’s a great way to learn about the community and connect with other newcomers,” Community Concierge Kristen Olson said in a press release. “We’re excited to show what Austin has to offer, sample some great food and make some new friends.”

The first Awesome Austin series was held last September and attended by 29 newcomers.

Awesome Austin is part of AustinWorks, a welcoming service formed through the chamber and Vision 2020’s Business Friendly Environment committee to address the loss of talented young professionals by connecting workers and their spouses to the community.

The program is designed to introduce and connect new employees and their families to Austin in the hope it will help people become a part of the community and make them want to stay in town.

As Community Concierge, Olson provides direct, personal assistance to newly employed professionals and their families, assisting them with housing, employment for the trailing spouse and connections to all family interests.

The program was developed through the Business Friendly Committee of Vision 2020 and is funded by the Hormel Foundation and major employers.
