Norma G. Hanson, 91, of Blooming Prairie, Minnesota, died Sunday morning, Nov. 30, 2014, at Mayo Clinic Health System – Austin.

Norma Geraldine Blockhus was born April 8, 1923, in Fayette County, Iowa, to Ole and Helen (Thorson) Blockhus. Norma attended grade school in Clermont, Iowa, and graduated from high school in Decorah, Iowa. Following high school, she attended summer school to obtain her teacher’s certificate. She then taught in country schools for three years. Norma met her future husband Kasper Hanson when he traveled to Iowa to visit his aunt, uncle, and his cousin Dorothy, who was Norma’s friend. On April 28, 1946, Norma and Kasper were married at East Clermont Lutheran Church. The couple raised three sons and three daughters. Kasper passed away in April 1974. From 1976 to 1982, Norma worked at Mer-Dot in Blooming Prairie, then at Prairie Manor for 17 years in various departments. She retired in February of 1998. Norma enjoyed reading, writing letters, and gardening. She was a member of Red Oak Grove Lutheran Church, where she taught Sunday school and was involved in ladies aid. She served as president of WELCA. Norma moved into Prairie Villa I in 2001.

Survivors include her three sons: Duane (Lynn) Hanson of Blooming Prairie, Curtis Hanson of Texas, and David (Judy) Hanson of Princeton, Minnesota; her three daughters: Karla Lacovino of Georgia, Sharon Sutter of Rochester, Minnesota, and Annette (Michael) Williams of Pensacola, Florida; 15 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren; one sister Verna (Ernest) Brandt of Waverly, Iowa; brother-in-law and sister-in-law Dale and Austra Hanson of Blooming Prairie, sisters-in-law Doris Samuelson of Elbow Lake, Minnesota, and Gloria Hanson of Phoenix, Arizona; nieces, nephews; other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents Ole and Helen Blockhus; her husband Kasper Hanson; three grandchildren: Jennifer and Valerie Sutter in infancy, and Jordan Ressler; in-laws: Luther, Lyle, Evelyn, Lorna Hanson, and Roland Samuelson.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Dec. 4, 2014, at Red Oak Grove Lutheran Church with Pastor Lindsay Stolen officiating. Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 3 at the Worlein Blooming Prairie Funeral Home, and one hour prior to the service at the church on Thursday. Interment will be in Red Oak Grove Lutheran Cemetery in the spring of 2015. Memorials can be directed to Red Oak Grove Lutheran Church or recipient of donor’s choice.
