George Clayton Hokanson, 85, of Austin, Minnesota, died Wednesday, Dec. 10, 2014, at St. Mark’s Living in Austin.

George was born Jan. 19, 1929, at Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin, the son of George H. and Emma (Webster) Hokanson. He was baptized at the Methodist Church in Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin.

George graduated from Mound High School in 1947, attended his freshman year at Hamline and graduated from St. Cloud College in 1951. He taught one year at Bellingham High School and served in the US Army for two years. After teaching in Braham High School for three years, he came to Austin High School in 1958 to teach business classes until he retired in 1991.

On July 28, 1962, George and Janet Struxness were united in marriage at Kviteseid Lutheran Church in Milan, Minnesota.

He served on the St. Mark’s Lutheran Home Board, as the Our Savior’s Lutheran Church treasurer, sang in the church choir for 40 years, belonged to the Sons of Norway, Retired Educators (AAREA, SEREAM, REAM), the Elks and the American Legion.

George was preceded in death by his parents, George and Emma: two brothers, Richard, and Theron.

Survivors include his wife Janet of Austin, Minnesota; two sons: Paul Hokanson of Ames, Iowa, and Keith (Kristin) Hokanson, of Phoenixville, Pennsylvania; four grandchildren: Austin, Erin and Emma Hokanson, and Cal Hokanson-Fuchs; sister-in-law: Elaine Hokanson, Green Valley, Arizona; brother-in-law and sister-in-law: Donald and Beverly Struxness, Milan, Minnesota; nieces, nephews and cousins.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 20, 2014, at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church with the Rev. Glenn L. Monson officiating. Visitation will be held at the church one hour prior to the service. Military honors by Austin Post No. 91 American Legion. Entombment will be at a later date at Oakwood Cemetery. The family prefers that memorials be made to Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Austin. Clasen-Jordan Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.
