SHOREVIEW — Two men were shot to death early Wednesday in separate incidents that led to the closure of Interstate 694 in Shoreview north of St. Paul, the Hennepin County sheriff’s office said.

Maple Grove police responding to a reported shooting at the Elm Creek rest stop on Interstate 94 in Maple Grove about 1 a.m. found a man who had been fatally shot in an apparent homicide, the sheriff’s office said in a statement.

Officers later spotted a vehicle matching the description of the suspect’s vehicle near where I-694 and I-94 split, the sheriff’s office said. They pursued the vehicle until it crashed on I-694, about 20 miles east of the rest stop.

Authorities said the driver got out and brandished a weapon. A Hennepin County sheriff’s deputy and a Brooklyn Center Police officer fired their weapons, and the suspect was killed, according to the statement.

The Maple Grove Police Department was investigating the rest stop shooting, while the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension was investigating the officer-involved shooting.

BCA agents and crime scene personnel were interviewing witnesses in the I-694 shooting, agency spokeswoman Jill Oliveira said.

Authorities planned to release more details at an 11 a.m. news conference.

The Minnesota Department of Transportation said I-694 would remain closed between Interstates 35W and 35E through the morning rush hour.
