Give to the Max Day took in a record-breaking amount of donations during its sixth annual fundraising drive for Minnesota nonprofits. Again.

As of midnight Thursday, the 24-hour online donation drive had netted $18.2 million for thousands of Minnesota nonprofits and schools.

Last year, donors gave a record $17.1 million; in 2012, the total was $16.4 million, the previous record.

Officials with GiveMN.org, the St. Paul-based nonprofit that manages Give to the Max Day, noted that the total would remain unofficial until a review is completed Friday.

The top-earning organizations in their respective categories as of midnight were:

— Overall Leaderboard: $585,000 for Cretin-Derham Hall in St. Paul

— Medium Leaderboard: $135,000 for Shir Tikvah Congregation in Minneapolis

— Small Leaderboard: $51,000 for Northeastern Minnesotans for Wilderness in Ely

— Colleges and Universities: $432,000 for Augsburg College in Minneapolis

Last year, would-be donors to GiveMN.org overwhelmed the website’s servers for about five hours during the afternoon. However, once the site began operating more smoothly in the early evening, donations picked up.

Officials this year worked to prevent such technological glitches, and their efforts seemed to be paying off. No major problems were reported Thursday.
