The city of Austin is receiving help for its upcoming Riverside Arena renovation.

The Minnesota Amateur Sports Commission recently announced Austin was one of 11 Mighty Ducks Ice Arena Grant winners. The city will receive $150,000 to go toward replacement much of the original equipment in the 40-year-old arena.

The $1.4 million project will include possibly replacing the arena floor, in-floor piping, compressors, roof air conditioning units, and boiler heating systems. Much of that equipment is beyond its lifespan, according to city officials.

The Austin City Council approved hiring Hammel, Green and Ambrahamson Inc. (HGA) in September to study the arena and form bid packages for arena upgrades next year. Public Works Director Steven Lang said work would hopefully begin after the Austin Bruins end their season in April or May.

“Any money we can get toward this project is greatly appreciated,” he said. “It helps to bring the cost to taxpayers down.”
