Best Bets: A weekend of song and skates

With fresh snow on the ground and a crisp temperatures, there are plenty of fun, indoor activities this weekend. With a choral concert, some mixed martial arts cage fights, and scrapbooking to fight cancer, there is sure to be a smile on everyone’s face.

1. ‘Heaven Is For Real’

6:30 to 8:30 p.m., Friday, Crane Community Chapel

The film “Heaven Is For Real” will be shown at Crane Community Chapel, 1111 – 9th Street NE. There is no cost and everyone is invited. Children 15 and under need to be accompanied by an adult.

2. VocalEssence: River Songs and Tales Tour

7:30 to 9:30 p.m., Friday, Knowlton Auditorium Austin High School

VocalEssence, a 36-voice choral ensemble from Minneapolis, will perform a number of pieces centered around a river theme.

This program is sponsored by the Austin Area Commission for the Arts, Music Boosters of Austin and Austin High School Choral Department. Don Shelby will perform as Mark Twain in this production. The concert will feature American favorites such as “Wade in the Water,” “Down to the River and Pray,” “Shenandoah,” “Shall We Gather at the River” and many more. Tickets are $15 in advance, or $20 at the door. 3. Adams Legion Chicken Fry

5:30 to 8:30 p.m., Saturday, Adams

The proceeds of the chicken fry will benefit the Residents of the Adams Healthcare Center.

4. Public Skate

3:45 to 5 p.m. Saturday, 2 to 3:30 p.m. Sunday, Packer Arena

Public skate is open to everyone, regardless of skating skill. The cost is $4 to skate, and $1 to rent skates. Feel free to bring your own skates if you have them. For more information, call 507-433-1881.

5. Crop for the Cure

9 a.m. to midnight Saturday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, Carpenter Community Center, Iowa

The event is one of many fundraiser that gives money to the annual Lyle Area Cancer Auction. The event features several hours of scrapbooking time, gifts, meals, door prizes, chair massages, a large silent auction, and more. This year’s event will also add a photo booth. Organizers are also adding a scrapbook garage sales, where people can donate unused scrapbook items that anyone can come and buy. Cost is $45 for one day and $65 for two days.

6. A-Town Throwdown IV

6 to 11 p.m., Saturday, Austin Holiday Inn

Root for your favorite local amateur and professional mixed martial arts cage fighters. This exciting show includes local favorite fighters such as Thomas Herrera and Chris Karge.
